The lucky bamboo plant is actually not a bamboo at all; it is an upright shrub in the genus Dracaena, family Ruscaceae. All true bamboo species belong to the tribe Bambuseae in the family Poaceae. The scientific name for the Lucky bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana, and the plant is also commonly known as Ribbon Dracaena or simply Ribbon Plant. 

The lucky bamboo plant is native to Cameroon, a country located in western Africa, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Cameroon is situated in a tropical part of the world and it is in the tropical rainforest that you will find wild lucky bamboo plants.
