Lucky bamboo Plant Care

Lucky bamboo plant care - light

The lucky bamboo is popular since it can be kept even in rooms where it receives very little light. It can also endure direct sun-light, but this can cause the leaves to turn yellow and should therefore ideally be avoided. The preferred location is one where the lucky bamboo will receive a lot of indirect sunlight.

Lucky bamboo plant care – water

If you keep your bamboo in a vase, the minimum lucky bamboo plant care requirement is to add new water once a week or change the water completely every second week. The water will however be much fresher if you change it completely once a week. The water level should always be kept around an inch from the cane base.

A lucky bamboo can also be planted in loose sand or soil mix. The proper lucky bamboo plant care for such a plant involves letting the top of the soil become dry before you add any new water. Sufficient bottom drainage is very important to prevent rot.

Lucky bamboo plant care – nutrition

The opinions vary somewhat between different lucky bamboo keepers regarding the issue of nutrition. All plants need some form of nutrition, so adding small amounts of nutrition to the water is a good idea. You can for instance use African violet fertilizer. Only use a mild solution and provide frequent feedings rather than chocking the plant with a large amount of nutrition once in a while. If you want to keep the size of your lucky bamboo plant down, you can limit the feedings.

Lucky bamboo plant care – propagating

You can propagate lucky bamboo by taking cuttings. Use a sharp knife and cut a stalk just beneath the joint. The cutting should be placed in fresh, clean water

Lucky bamboo plant care – yellow leaves

Yellow leaves can be caused by several things. If your plant starts turning yellow, the appropriate lucky bamboo plant care involves protecting the plant from direct sunlight and checking your tap water. If the tap water is too heavily fluoridated or contains too much salt, it can cause the leaves to yellow. Find another water source, such as bottled water, and see if it helps.

Lucky bamboo plant care – repotting

Repotting, or rather re-vasing, a lucky bamboo plant kept in a vase is naturally very easy. You simply move the bamboo plant to a new, larger vase. You can also choose to plant your lucky bamboo in loose sand or soil mix. Adequate bottom drainage is very important to prevent rot. You should always let the top soil turn dry before you give the plant any water.

Lucky bamboo plant care – Feng Shui arrangements

For those who believe in Feng Shui, the number of lucky bamboo stalks is not only a matter of aesthetics. Three stalks symbolises happiness, five stalks stands for wealth and six stalks is believed to have a positive health effect. Four stalks are usually avoided, since the word for “four” sounds almost like the word for “death” in Chinese Mandarin, Japanese and the Cantonese dialect spoken in Hong Kong
